Spotlight on the Arts is the University of Georgia's annual celebration of the literary, visual and performing arts. Held each November, the monthlong festival highlights the arts and humanities on campus with dozens of events and exhibitions.

Jazz Ensembles I & II

Jazz Ensembles I and II are comprised of traditional big band instruments and play music of various styles both on campus and in the community. Jazz Ensemble I is conducted by David D’Angelo, and Jazz Ensemble II is co-conducted by Greg Satterthwaite and James Weidman.

Pop-Up Exhibition

Shannon and Peter Candler Collection Study Room, Georgia Museum of Art
Katelyn Stauffer’s POLS 1101 (American Government) class developed this pop-up exhibition while meeting at the museum over the course of the fall 2024 semester. They selected objects from the collection that focus on the dark and light side of politics. The pop-up exhibition will be on view in the Shannon and Peter Candler Collection Study Room during regular museum hours November 5 - 7.

Faculty Perspectives: Chris Hocking and Asen Kirin

Georgia Museum of Art
Chris Hocking, associate professor of art, and Asen Kirin, Parker Curator of Russian Art and professor of art history, will present a special gallery program focused on lithographs on view in the exhibition “Saint Petersburg as Franz Liszt Saw It.” Hocking and Kirin will expand on techniques and themes from the exhibition through the lens of their areas of expertise in painting and printmaking and Russian art history. The gallery conversation will be accompanied by a printmaking demonstration on the museum's first floor.

“Spacing Out: Art and Topology Pop-up Museum” at the UGA McBay Science Library is a special exhibition, coordinated by the UGA mathematics department in tandem with the UGA Arts Collaborative, showcasing an exciting variety of student artworks inspired by and demonstrating fascinating objects from the mathematical field of topology. The featured works include fabric arts, ceramics, laser-cut wooden sculpture, 3D animations, and more. “Spacing Out” will be on full display at the Shirley Mathis McBay Science Library from November 6 - December 1.

The Lamar Dodd School of Art welcomes animator and director Mack Williams, UGA alum and 2024 Bulldog 100 recipient, to deliver the 2024 Jack Davis Lecture on the occasion of the centennial of Jack Davis’ birth. A renowned cartoonist and founder of MAD Magazine, Jack Davis was born in Atlanta in 1924. He has been beloved by the UGA community for decades for his quintessential illustrations of the Georgia Bulldogs and Bulldog fandom.

Spotlight Family Day: Coming Home

We’re partnering with the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read for our Spotlight on the Arts Family Day. Little Characters Theater Troupe will perform a performance piece inspired by the featured book “Show Way” (by Jacqueline Woodson), and families can join in group improv games. The event will also include interactive art cart activities, a quilting demonstration by local artist Beatrice Brown and a take-home art project. The first 50 guests will receive a free copy of “Show Way.”

In The Dancer’s Voice Rumya Sree Putcha theorizes how the Indian classical dancer performs the complex dynamics of transnational Indian womanhood. Putcha argues that the public persona of the Indian dancer has come to represent India in the global imagination. In listening closely to and for the dancer’s voice, she offers a new way to understand the intersections of body, voice, performance, caste, race, gender, and nation.

Driven by music and lyrics from the incomparable Dolly Parton, 9 to 5: The Musical tells the story of three female coworkers’ plan to get even with their lying, no good, egotistical boss Franklin Hart. With Hart out of the way, Violet, Judy, and Doralee aim to give their workplace a much-needed makeover, taking control of the company that has always kept them down. Based on the seminal 1980 film, this Rolodex era musical is just as outrageous, thought-provoking, and jubilant as its predecessor.

Pictures for Charis, is driven by photographer Kelli Connell’s obsession with the writer Charis Wilson, Edward Weston’s partner, model, and collaborator during one of the most productive segments of his historic career. A photo book of Pictures for Charis was co-published by Aperture and the Center for Creative Photography and is on reserve in the Art Library at the Lamar Dodd School of Art

This exhibition is organized in conjunction with the American Liszt Society Festival at the University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music. The event celebrates the legacy of the Hungarian composer and pianist Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886). This year’s edition of the festival focuses on the idea of the “composer-pianist” and highlights Liszt’s visits to Russia in the 1840s.

"A Perfect Model: Prints after Anthony van Dyck’s Portraits"

Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599 – 1641) was one of the most successful artists of his generation, especially admired for his evocative portraits. He undertook the ambitious project of creating a series of prints depicting famous scholars, military men, nobles and artists. This exhibition presents prints that attest to Van Dyck’s lasting impact as printmaker and portraitist.

Sternfeld published “When It Changed,” a book of these images, in 2007. It outlines alarming scientific discoveries, the actions and inactions of governments and corporations and increasingly extreme weather events. This exhibition presents the photographs from that book.
