Art Rocks Athens 2014

Athens, Georgia is well known for its vibrant music scene. What is less known, however, is that artists from the era of 1975-85 gave rise to the music, and then their music went on to influence the art. Art Rocks Athens Foundation, a non-profit organization, was formed to explore and document that time period, and to present a retrospective of the work of artists who were living and making art in the vortex of creativity that centered on Athens. Through the conservation of both artworks and music-related artifacts, Art Rocks Athens Foundation seeks to make a verifiable record of this history and its lasting importance to the town so many people love.

On May 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014, UGA Special Collections Libraries will host the Art Rocks Athens exhibition of music artifacts from the time period. Look for wigs, rare guitars, original drum kits, and gorgeous theatrical attire to set the stage for this show. Later that month, the Art Rocks Athens Foundation will present a retrospective exhibition of art of the period 1975-85 at the Lamar Dodd School of Art beginning May 23, 2014. True to the spirit of the time, artworks in every medium by renowned and unknown artists alike will bring an eruption of form and color to the gallery walls.

Off campus, at the Lyndon House Art Center, there will be a large graphics show including posters, flyers, album and magazine covers, buttons, bumper stickers, and other ephemera. Over the two-month period, screenings of rare archival film footage at Ciné and other venues promise to provide a unique view of this period. Talks by local and New York filmmakers and subjects of the films will accompany the movies. Additional planned activities include satellite art shows in Atlanta and around Athens in smaller venues, panel discussions, performance art, the reconstruction of dance works by students and independent choreographers of the era, and concerts at the 40 Watt Club and Georgia Theatre.
